TIGA calls for more balanced local support of gaming sector

Game developers in certain parts of the country may be receiving limited funding due an unbalanced allocation of local support, according to The Industry Gaming Association (TIGA).
The trade body has raised concerns after discovering that certain regional development agencies (RDAs) are offering minimal financial support to the sector compared to others.
It highlighted the fact that One North East spent £931,000 on gaming-related projects in 2008-09, while the South East Economic Development Agency allocated only £58,000 in the same timeframe.
Dr Richard Wilson, chief executive officer of TIGA, said this trend may be linked to the underfunding of certain RDAs, suggesting it could be harmful to the games industry.
He said: "The existing funding arrangements mean that clusters of video game developers with potential receive minimal support."
Last week, Dr Wilson called for the government to do more to promote and support students looking to specialise in games development-related skills, in order to encourage growth in the sector.
