Nintendo wins battle to ban R4 cards in UK

Nintendo wins battle to ban R4 cards in UKNintendo has won a court ruling which outlaws the UK sale of R4 cards, devices commonly used for the piracy of games for its DS handheld.

The judgement, issued by London's High Court, has made it illegal for R4 manufacturers Playables Limited and Wai Dat Chan to import, advertise or sell the devices in Britain.

R4's makers had attempted to argue that the device, which allows custom code to run on the DS as well as illegally-copied game ROMs, is legitimate as a means of using "homebrew" applications on the handheld.

However, the court decided the fact that R4 bypasses Nintendo's security systems to function makes it illegal.

A statement from Nintendo said: "Nintendo initiates these actions not only on its own behalf, but also on behalf of over 1,400 video game-development companies that depend on legitimate sales of games for their survival."

Last month, Ian Curran of publisher THQ told CVG that Nintendo is set to incorporate "sophisticated" new anti-piracy measures on the 3DS, the forthcoming successor to the DS.
