22/01/2010
Lara Croft, the archaeologist-adventurer protagonist of the Tomb Raider franchise, has been recognised as the most successful female gaming star ever by Guinness World Records.
The character, created by developer Core Design in 1996, has been bestowed with the honour in the latest Gamer's Edition of the famous record book alongside five other titles.
These include recognition for the detailed character model used in 2009 release Tomb Raider: Underworld, while the franchise has also spawned the highest-grossing videogame-based movie series ever.
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider hit cinemas in 2001 and starred high-profile actress Angelina Jolie in the title role, as did the 2003 sequel Lara Croft: Tomb Raider - The Cradle of Life.
Karl Stewart, brand director at Crystal Dynamics, which developed the most recent entries in the series, hailed the continuing popularity of the character 14 years after her debut.
He said: "She continues to break new ground and we are thrilled that Lara has been recognised through these Guinness World Records."
