Half-Life 2 tops game of the decade pollValve's PC title Half-Life 2 has been voted the Game of the Decade in a poll conducted by IGN.com.

The 2004 first-person shooter sequel topped the gaming countdown in the entertainment portal's Best of the Decade awards, with Team Ico's 2006 release Shadow of the Colossus coming in second.

Half-Life 2, which has also been released on Xbox, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, has won considerable acclaim since its release and is noted for its storytelling quality and sophisticated physics engine.

BioWare's Star Wars title Knights of the Old Republic placed third in the ranking, while the remainder of the top five was completed by Grand Theft Auto III, the first 3D game in the crime series, and Nintendo's acclaimed platformer Super Mario Galaxy.

IGN UK editor-in-chief Alex Simmons stated that he expects the next decade of gaming to be significantly influenced by the advent of 3D and motion-control technology.

He said: "When we compile the list for 2020 we expect the nature of the winning games to have evolved almost beyond recognition."
