Elspa applauds High Court ban on R4 cards

Elspa applauds High Court ban on R4 cardsThe Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association (Elspa) has responded positively to news that R4 cards, which are commonly used in Nintendo DS piracy, have been banned.

Michael Rawlinson, director general of Elspa, said the organisation is "delighted" with the High Court ruling, which makes the importing, advertising and sale of the devices illegal in the UK.

Playables Limited and Wai Dat Chan, the companies behind the R4, were unsuccessful in their attempts to argue that the device is a legitimate means of playing "homebrew" games.

Mr Rawlinson outlined the role played by Elspa's own Intellectual Property (IP) Crime Unit in bringing the R4 to the attention of authorities, as well as praising Nintendo and Trading Standards for their work.

"Intellectual property theft is an important issue for the videogames industry and this judgement will assist the IP Crime Unit team in actively pursuing and stopping other individuals who deal in R4 cards," he added.

In addition to his role at Elspa, Mr Rawlinson is also vice-chairman of the Alliance Against IP Theft, a position for which he was selected earlier this month.
