EA marks 20th anniversary of The Sims
05/02/2010
EA has hailed the impact of its lifestyle simulation title The Sims since its debut exactly a decade ago.
The publisher has marked the tenth anniversary of the release of the first Sims game on PC by praising the success of the franchise, which has now accrued more than $2.5 billion (£1.6 billion) since its debut in 2000.
So far, three core games have been released in the series, in addition to a multitude of add-ons and expansion packs, with lifetime sales for Sims titles topping 125 million worldwide.
The series was the brainchild of designer Will Wright, who is also known for his part in creating franchises such as SimCity and Spore.
Rod Humble, head of the EA Play brand for the software company, said the franchise's success is attributable to its accessible nature and focus on user creativity.
He added: "It is rare for an entertainment franchise to be gaining momentum a decade after release, so this is a particularly pleasant moment for everyone who has worked on the games."
